This blocked pipe John,was it a stream that naturally oxygenated Peters Lake in the past and was piped to allow for development,or is Peters lake man made?? just curious!!

Peters Lake as far as I am aware is not man made and in fact may have been larger at one time. As a fishery, its history is chequered and was rumoured years ago to hold quite monstrous eels that is according to local folklore so to speak. A lot of the town drainage went straight to the lake and up until about 40-50 years ago the town dump was located on the shoreline of the lake. I believe that when the area was reclaimed a lot of the sediment on the lake bed was left for obvious reasons as it was thought better not to disturb it.
In later years (mid 90’s) the lake suffered two serious fish kills and Monaghan Town Council did all they could at the time to reduce the level of mortalities by aerating the water. Between 2002 and 2004 there was a major revamp of the town drainage around Peters Lake. Around that time Rossmore Coarse Angling Club met consultants working for the Town Council and proposed a series of measures to improve water quality, which included an aeration system including a fountain among other things as dissolved oxygen levels, had been an issue for years for one reason or another. A fountain was put in and thankfully stocks as a consequence of the different work undertaken have been on the increase.
On the day of the incident, some of the Rossmore CAC members attended the scene and spoke to the Town Council, who were quick to install aerators while they addressed the cause. The Fishery Board; EPA and local paper were all on the scene and the effort of everyone involved was commendable. I have no doubt that the Town Council will waste no time rectifying whatever pipework or blockage that caused the problem. Certainly, it is a fact that Peters Lake is an important amenity within the town and by virtue of its urban location does require some special attention. Good to see its getting it.

Its for sure now that many of these species habitat are extremely fragile. They are been killed everyday for their food and dont even think before they do this.
